Cerebral: a HIPAA EMR at millions of patient records
Cerebral is a mental healthcare service with its own electronic medical records system, prescriptions and insurance handling. I was a staff backend engineer there from June 2020 to February 2023.
The problem
A healthcare startup that grew to a unicorn in under a year, on a Rails codebase whose EMR, prescription flows and third-party integrations had to scale with it under HIPAA.
What I did
- Built and upgraded integrations with Gentem, DoseSpot and Truepill.
- Built and maintained the prescription processing workflows.
- Upgraded the EMR to handle millions of patient records.
- Integrated prescription and insurance providers.
- Upgraded the admin dashboard and improved the doctor-facing screens.
Result
Millions of patient records; the company went from small startup to unicorn in under a year.
Hackathon winner (first place, May 2021) and top performer of the month (August 2021).
